When you get a merchant account, you will usually see an
Address Verification Service (AVS)
fee.
This fee helps to check the billing address for the customer. However, if
you do not perform this function (or are unable to because it is an
international transaction) your transaction will be downgraded to what is known
as a non-qualified rate. The merchant account providers consider these
transactions to be a higher risk for a chargeback or potential fraud.
The next basic step in helping to prevent fraud is Card Verification Value (CVV2), Card Verification Code 2 (CVC2), and Card Identification Number (CID). Even though they are not as much help as Visa / MasterCard / American Express / Discover would have hoped, they should be used as another tool to help you prevent fraud.
